Science

Science is a core area of the National Curriculum. Science is studied by all pupils and takes up a significant part of each week’s learning. Where possible, knowledge and understanding are gained through first hand experience, but there are occasions when books, charts, pictures and web-based resources will supplement this.

Children are encouraged to plan, predict, hypothesise, design and carry out investigations and interpret and draw inferences from their results. They will be encouraged to communicate their results to others, through talking, drawing, diagrams, graphs, models and writing. Each Year Group studies a progression of Science topics and skills which combine to give children a detailed knowledge, understanding and experience of science and the confidence to work scientifically.

We use the White Rose resources to support science teaching in each year group.

Science in the Early Years, is included in one of the seven areas of learning known as “Understanding of the World: The World.” Scientific learning occurs through access to a range of developmentally appropriate practical activities based on first hand experiences. For example, a nature walk, magnifiers to explore the natural world, wet/dry sand. Exploration of both indoor and outdoor environments links in all areas of learning; recognition and extension of their existing knowledge and understanding from home.
