VE Day Celebration Ideas

Dear School Family,

If we had been together in school, we would have celebrated 75 years since VE Day in school with a party. I hope that your household can still mark the occasion on Friday 8th May 2020, with a celebration, maybe including your family remotely. There will be some activity ideas on your class pages next week.

Here are some links to ideas from English Heritage about celebrating at home and a message and song links from Mrs Geelan.

Dan Snow has also provided links and a competition to encourage children and families to learn about the importance of VE Day:

Best wishes, Mrs Howard

VE Day 75 songs for a family singalong.

Dear all,

Sadly, we are unable to celebrate and sing together as a school community, so I have put together some links and lyrics for songs that children can enjoy singing with other family members.

Medley – some KS2 children may already be familiar:

There’ll always be an England

White cliffs of Dover

There'll be bluebirds over

The white cliffs of Dover

Tomorrow

Just you wait and see

There'll be love and laughter

And peace ever after

Tomorrow

When the world is free

The shepherd will tend his sheep

I know the valley's gonna bloom again

And Jimmy will go to sleep

In his own little room again

Well, there'll be bluebirds over

The white cliffs of Dover

Tomorrow

Just you wait and see

We’ll meet again

We'll meet again

Don't know where

Don't know when

But I know we'll meet again some sunny day

Keep smiling through

Just like you always do

'Till the blue skies drive the dark clouds far away

So will you please say hello

To the folks that I know

Tell them I won't be long

They'll be happy to know

That as you saw me go

I was singing this song

We'll meet again

Don't know where

Don't know when

But I know we'll meet again some sunny day.

Enjoy some rousing traditional English music.  Children may be able to identify instruments, talk about the TEMPO, PITCH, RHYTHM, MOOD of the music.

You could compare and contrast ‘Jerusalem’ with ‘Land of Hope and Glory.’ (Links below)

I hope you are able to celebrate and enjoy this wonderful occasion in the comfort of your homes and gardens.

Keep singing, ‘I know we’ll meet again some sunny day.’

Mrs Geelan.
